It all came together one weekend in Bend, Oregon, at my friend’s ranch. Volcanic rocks and lava were scattered everywhere—gravel in the driveway, big lava rocks along the roads, and the iconic volcanoes in the distance, like the Three Sisters and Black Butte. Inspired by my surroundings, I grabbed some driveway rocks, darted to a craft store, and started cooking up soap in the ranch kitchen. What a vacation activity: whipping up soap in Central Oregon! My friend and boyfriend were not thrilled.
The first batch looked like something the Flintstones would use—blue, lumpy, and not pleasant to touch. But back in Portland, I added a mix of volcanic ash, bentonite, zeolite, and pumice, and Lava Love finally came to life.
These pumice-like, sandy, and creamy bars became a hit, and soon, I was sharing them with everyone I knew. They immediately fell in love with this scratchy, silky soap I’d envisioned back at the ranch.
