Searching for Alan Alda: Feeding my “Same Time Next Year” Obsession Via the Heritage House in Mendocino

As a kid growing up in the 70s, I loved going to the movies with my parents. We saw “Jaws” and “Star Wars” on opening day. I saw “Tommy” in the theater when I was still in fourth grade. But none of these films stayed with me and fed my fantasy of someday moving across the country to Northern California like “Same Time, Next Year.”

The dreamy film location enchants visitors to this day.

Starring the ever-so-crush worthy Alan Alda – who didn’t like his Hawkeye Pierce in M*A*S*H? –  and filmed in the gorgeous Northern California coastal town of Mendocino, this forbidden love dramedy captured the complexities of love and relationships in a way that felt both taboo and relatable. I probably shouldn’t have been viewing this romanticized tale of adultery aimed at the middle-aged key party crowd when I was 12 but, heck, it was the ‘70s and I’d already seen the aforementioned rock opera “Tommy” when I was 9 and the gory Hitchcock thriller “Frenzy” at 12 so what was a little on-screen relationship cheating compared to that? And compared to my college age sister taking me to the “Frampton Comes Alive” tour (front row) when I was 11, this was extra tame.

Remember the restaurant where they met?

Where the star-crossed lovers first met in the “restaurant” on site.

Despite the adult themes, there was something about the breezy dialogue and Alda’s and co-star Ellen Burstyn’s infectious charm that kept me glued to the screen. Fast forward to today, and my obsession with this movie has come full circle, leading me to a fascination with the lovely Heritage House Resort in Mendocino, California—where this iconic film was brought to life. (Kind of. Much of it was shot on a sound stage in Los Angeles but some exterior and interior shots were filmed here).

The Heritage House, perched on a stunning cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, is a gem of a resort that exudes cinematic charm. Its quaint cottages and gorgeous vistas create an inviting atmosphere, making it the perfect getaway. When I discovered that the very cottage featured in “Same Time, Next Year” was part of this property, I knew I had to learn more.

The cottage itself is a cozy retreat that offers an intimate setting reminiscent of the film’s romantic escapades but much more luxurious. Stepping inside you may feel like you’ve been transported back to an idealized version of that 1970s film. The décor is a blend of vintage charm and modern comfort, with rustic wooden beams, a cozy fireplace, and large windows that flood the space with natural light. It’s easy to imagine Alda and Ellen Burstyn sharing laughs and heart-wrenching moments of guilt for the suggested lovemaking that took place in this same space.

The Heritage House website boasts that the Same Time Next Year accommodations feature a king-sized bed, a fully equipped kitchen, and a spacious living area perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. The bathroom, complete with a soaking tub, allows guests to indulge in a little self-care while gazing out at the breathtaking coastal views. I was thrilled to find that the cottage can accommodate up to two guests, making it an ideal romantic retreat or a solo escape for some much-needed rest from big city life.

The Same Time Next Year Cottage at the Heritage House in Mendocino

I soon learned that the cost for a night is $600-$700 – ouch. But I think the serene ambiance, combined with the rich history of the Heritage House, makes it worth every penny. Nestling into the plush bedding, you might sense the ghost of Alda’s character, George, walking through the door for his secret yearly rendezvous with Doris, played by Burstyn. The cottage was the perfect space for their annual meetings—filled with laughter, love, and the bittersweet pangs of life’s choices. Even a big lover’s quarrel.

“Same Time, Next Year,” which premiered in 1978 and was adapted from the play by Bernard Slade, explores the complexities of a long-term love affair that develops over the years. It follows George and Doris as they meet at the same inn every year, navigating the ups and downs of their lives while maintaining their clandestine relationship. The film touches on themes of fidelity, commitment, and the fleeting nature of time, all wrapped in Alda’s signature charm.

The filming of this iconic movie took place (somewhat) in this very cottage making the experience feel even more special. As you sit on the porch, sipping a glass of wine and watching the sun dip below the horizon, you can almost hear the echoes of their conversations, filled with humor and heart. The air is thick with nostalgia, and the sound of waves crashing against the cliffs served as the perfect backdrop to your Hollywood musings.

The dreamy cottage features sweeping views of the Pacific.

Exploring the Heritage House grounds is a delight, as the property is surrounded by lush gardens and scenic trails that lead to the coastline. You can spend days wandering the paths, imagining the moments captured on film, and soaking in the beauty of the landscape that inspired such heartfelt storytelling.

In addition to its cinematic history, the Heritage House is also known for its commitment to sustainability, featuring eco-friendly amenities and practices that make it an environmentally conscious destination. This dedication to preserving the natural beauty of the area only adds to the appreciation of the property.

Alan Alda would approve.

If you share my love for classic films or simply seek a romantic getaway filled with history and breathtaking views, the Heritage House and its Same Time Next Year cottage are calling your name.

You might even go back at the same time next year.

In the meantime: Check out the Theme Song/Opening scene.
